The costs and benefits of climate change adaption – The evidence

Climate change is already impacting the way councils manage their assets and deliver their services. Local government plays a key role in facilitating community adaptation, however, the lack of evidence to support council decision making is already presenting a challenge for the sector. This session seeks to explore these issues by examining the costs and benefits emerging from a number of key projects being delivered around the state.

Planning sustainable communities – A collaborative approach

Land use planning has a key role to play in carbon mitigation, but it is also the most effective lever to use to create safe and resilient places in a changing climate. How do we support climate resilience through a Precinct Structure Plan? Can we deliver zero carbon at neighbourhood scale? What are some of the practical challenges in implementing sustainable residential subdivisions? This session will showcase three cutting edge projects aiming to answer these questions and use the planning system to deliver sustainability at scale.

Neighbourhood batteries – Where to from here for councils and regions?

With an increasing number of homes switching to solar, and a move towards energy independence, there is growing demand for battery storage across Victoria. Future options for neighbourhood batteries will differ across councils and regions, depending on a range of local factors. This session will explore what we have learnt from neighbourhood battery trials to date, and unpack pressing questions regarding the future of neighbourhood batteries and the role of local government.
