Getting off gas
To achieve Victoria’s emission reduction goals, we will need to find sustainable alternatives to gas and embrace new technologies as we transition to a net zero emission economy. But what are the implications for the community? Who are the winners and losers? What role do councils have in facilitating the community’s transition? This panel session will explore the transition away from gas in the community, and at state and local government level. Hosted by Scott McKenry, Executive Officer of the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action, the panel includes: Andrew Reddaway, Senior Consultant, Australian Energy Foundation – Hydrogen: help or hype? What will be the fuel of choice for households? and action Planning, by its very nature, is an aspirational profession. This is particularly so when considering the opportunities for climate resilient places and communities. But, as planners know, decisions on land use are made within a rigid rule-based system, where aspiration is often difficult to follow though. How can council planners get the most out of planning as a public policy tool to achieve climate resilient outcomes? This session presents case studies on what’s possible within the current system, what’s possible with a collaborative ‘tweaking’ of the system, and what might be considered radical action. This session will explain the State’s initiatives and assistance for councils to transition to zero emissions fleets, and show why and how to go beyond fleets to effectively promote active transport and walking with some innovative case studies.
