In order to "walk the talk" this conference incorporated the following sustainability features:
- The venue is powered by 30kW of solar panels
- Vegetarian catering was provided by ASRC, a social enterprise (if you would like to use a social enterprise to cater for your event, City of Melbourne provides a handy list of them)
- There was no single use plastic at the event - this is a Darebin City Council policy
- No disposable crockery, cutlery or cups was provided at the conference, and napkins were made from recycled material and composted afterwards
- Food waste was kept to a minimum by encouraging guests to bring a container to take home extra food, and any leftover food was composted
- The venue is on a tram and bus route, and Bell train station is 500 metres away
- A contribution towards a Gold Standard verified offset project in Timor-Leste was made to offset carbon emissions from the conference. The project works with subsistence farming communities to replant forests, creating a carbon store. This project helps build local economies and delivers practical education and training in agroforestry and permaculture
- The minimal bulk printing was done by a carbon neutral printer on 100% recycled paper using a waterless printing process.
