Victorian Climate Resilience Councils – A program to help councils raise their adaptive capacity The greenhouse alliances, led by WAGA, are developing a program of support to raise the capacity of all Victorian councils for resilient services and operations: the Victorian Climate Resilient Councils (VCRC) program. Yes, it's ambitious and we're taking two years to develop the model. In the meantime, we're focusing on the initial steps towards adaptive capacity and one critical service area: emergency management. This session will update everyone on the model and look more closely at the first element of good adaptation for councils – leadership and strong internal engagement. Facilitator: Fran MacDonald, Executive Officer, Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action Heather McListon, Climate Change Adaptation Project Officer, Victorian Climate Resilient Councils Development Coordinator, Wyndham City Council Darren Wilson, Environmental Planner, City of Greater Dandenong Download presentations / [Room 103] Sustainable Transport – The role of councils in driving down emissions in the transport sector Decarbonising the transport system will be critical for transitioning our communities to net zero. Councils are already making an impact through a range of innovative approaches targeting active transport, education, public transport, e-mobility and public EV charging infrastructure. However, the cost of this innovation is often high and the relative bang-for-buck is not clearly understood. This session will explore the role of councils in facilitating emissions reductions in the transport sector and examine issues around costs and benefits by showcasing projects in both rural and metropolitan settings. Facilitator: Scott McKenry, Executive Officer, Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action James Guy, Executive Manager City Design, City of Ballarat – Ballarat e-scooter trial Sowmya Nagaraj, Senior Sustainability and Climate Change Officer, City of Port Phillip – Kerbside EV charging pilot Vaughn Allan, Strategic Transport Lead, Merri-bek City Council – IMAP bike network model Download presentations /
[Room 104] Electrifying councils – Electrification of council assets Electrification of council assets is a key opportunity to reduce corporate emissions and showcase the shift away from gas in buildings. What are some of the main opportunities and challenges of this work? What is the best approach for large-scale projects such as aquatic centres, or for the degasification of smaller buildings? This session will unpack some key lessons learnt from councils who have completed projects, and explore how to get started. Facilitator: Tiffany Harrison, Coordinator, Gippsland Alliance for Climate Action Ashley Onori, Climate Emergency Officer, Brimbank City Council – All electric aquatic centre case study: Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre Thorsten Padeffke, Principal ESD, LCI Consultants – Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre: exploring the technical ESD details Indy Lingam, Greenhouse Programs Leader, Yarra City Council – Case study: Degasification of smaller-scale council buildings Download presentations /
[Rooms 105 & 106] Traditional Knowledge – Elevating First Nations-led responses to climate change First Nations people are on the frontlines of climate change in Australia, caring for Country and disproportionally impacted by climate change. This session will explore First Nations perspectives on the climate crisis, and why First Nations solutions must be front and centre in local response to climate change. The session aims to foster understanding of how local governments and Traditional Owners can work together to achieve climate and biodiversity outcomes and make self-determination a reality. How can local governments elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, knowledge, and voices in local responses to climate change? How do we ensure that First Nations communities play a significant role in and benefit from the clean energy transition? What does good partnership and engagement look like? Facilitator: Annika Kearton, Chief Executive Officer, Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance Jonathan Kneebone, Director of Policy and Engagement, First Nations Clean Energy Network Oli Moraes, Galk-galk Dhelkunya (Forest Gardening) Project Manager, Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation James Hackel, Manager, NRM & Economic Development, Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations Go back to Conference Program > |
