This panel discussion showcases how regional climate alliances are helping Victorian councils deliver scalable, data-driven solutions to climate risk. Drawing on leading projects from across Victoria, the panel will highlight the real-world outcomes, insights and benefits of working together to build climate-resilient communities.

Council climate reporting: emerging requirements and current tools

This session will provide attendees an understanding of the climate reporting landscape (including Scope 3). It will reflect on the advantages of utilising current mandatory reporting mechanisms, in advance of mandatory requirements for councils. We will hear from two projects that have explored this at an individual council level and regional level, gaining insights on how they approached this, what challenges they experienced and benefits they have identified.

Leading the charge: Electrifying apartment communities

Exploring how electrification can support more sustainable, low-emissions apartments and units, bringing together policy insights, technical expertise and local government experience. It will begin with an overview of the current state of sustainable strata, followed by a presentation on building electrification and its opportunities and challenges. A council case study will highlight practical work underway in apartments, alongside a focus on advocacy priorities and actions needed to accelerate change. The session will conclude with a facilitated discussion, enabling participants to share insights and identify pathways to advance electrification across the sector.

Generating impact: Sustaining local climate action in uncertain times

This session responds to the pivot of some councils away from climate action and will address the reasons and risks of this. It will also discuss why LGAs should make climate action 'core business' and the all-important conundrum - how.

Innovative thinking: Latest research on climate and local government

From climate adaptation tracking and equitable local government climate policy to the governance of the energy transition, the session will showcase new ideas, practical insights and research that can help councils and practitioners navigate an increasingly complex climate action landscape. Together, the presentations will challenge conventional thinking and spark discussion on how research can better inform policy and decision-making across all levels of government.
