[Rooms 101 & 102]
Sustainable Transport - emerging approaches for electrification and modal shifts

Decarbonising the transport system will be critical for transitioning our communities to net zero. Councils are already making an impact through a range of innovative approaches targeting active transport, education, public transport, e-mobility and public EV charging infrastructure. However, the cost of this innovation is often high and the relative bang-for-buck is not clearly understood. This session will explore the role of councils in facilitating emissions reductions in the transport sector and examine issues around costs and benefits by showcasing projects in both rural and metropolitan settings.

Facilitator: Scott McKenry, Executive Officer, Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action

[Room 103]
Keeping Climate on the Agenda - effective engagement within shifting council priorities and politics

Climate change remains an urgent health, social and environment issue, with local councils and communities at the forefront of the impacts. However, with competing demands, interests, politics and misinformation abounding, in many councils climate action has slipped or remains lower on the priority list. What are effective communication strategies to ensure support for climate action in spite of these issues, including with council leadership and decision makers, as well as our communities? What are the key  topics or issues that cut through?

This session will explore these issues with knowledgable communications and local government sector experts, as well as provide a space for discussion with your peers, recognising that we all have lessons to share and that we are also all learning how best to navigate shifting levels of support.

Facilitator: Tiffany Harrison, Coordinator, Gippsland Alliance for Climate Action

Risky Business - unlocking financial and insurance solutions to address material climate risks

As the frequency and severity of extreme weather events increase due to climate change, council-owned infrastructure is confronting escalating risks. Local governments often face significant challenges, including limited access to reliable data and constrained financial resources for long-term resilience planning. This session explores emerging strategies to future-proof assets and communities, and showcases current initiatives aimed at mitigating material climate-related risks.

Facilitator: Helen Steel, Chief Executive Officer, South Eastern Councils Climate Change Alliance

[Rooms 105 & 106]

Race to Net Zero - could a VECO-style collaborative procurement model work for local nature-based carbon offsets?

NAGA recently completed a project to better understand how councils can collaborate on the procurement of carbon credits as part of their plans to meet net zero emission commitments. The study particularly focused on procurement of local nature-based carbon drawdown projects. This session will provide an overview of the findings from this study which will help to inform suitable procurement models for councils to enter into group-based approaches to buy carbon credits to offset residual emissions from their corporate emissions.

Facilitator: Dean Thomson, Executive Officer, Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action
