Getting off gas
To achieve Victoria’s emission reduction goals, we will need to find sustainable alternatives to gas and embrace new technologies as we transition to a net zero emission economy. But what are the implications for the community? Who are the winners and losers? What role do councils have in facilitating the community’s transition? This panel session will explore the transition away from gas in the community, and at state and local government level. Hosted by Scott McKenry, Executive Officer of the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action, the panel includes:

Andrew Reddaway, Senior Consultant, Australian Energy Foundation – Hydrogen: help or hype? What will be the fuel of choice for households?

Donna Luckman, Zero Carbon Campaigns Lead, Moreland City Council – Electrify Everything: the role of councils in communicating electrification

Craig Memery, Program Director, Energy + Water Consumers’ Advocacy Program, Public Interest Advocacy Centre – risks and opportunities for consumers in the transition away from gas

Land use planning for climate resilience
and action

Planning, by its very nature, is an aspirational profession. This is particularly so when considering the opportunities for climate resilient places and communities. But, as planners know, decisions on land use are made within a rigid rule-based system, where aspiration is often difficult to follow though. How can council planners get the most out of planning as a public policy tool to achieve climate resilient outcomes? This session presents case studies on what’s possible within the current system, what’s possible with a collaborative ‘tweaking’ of the system, and what might be considered radical action. Hosted by Natasha Palich, Executive Officer of the Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment, this session will feature:

Bridie Guy, CASBE Project Lead, Municipal Association of Victoria – A case study of working within the current planning framework – Elevating sustainability in planning

David Hajzler, Strategic Planner, Hume City Council – A case study of tweaking the system – Craigieburn West Precinct Structure Planning

Associate Professor Joe Hurley, Sustainability and Urban Planning, RMIT University – A case study of radical action: holding the system to account

Zero emissions vehicles, active travel
and sustainable transport

Implementing sustainable transport strategies is within reach of all councils. This session will explain the State’s initiatives and assistance for councils to transition to zero emissions fleets, and show why and how to go beyond fleets to effectively promote active transport and walking with some innovative case studies. Hosted by Fran MacDonald, Executive Officer of the Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action, the panel for this session includes:

Sam Johnson, Manager Sustainable Transport, Energy Strategy, DELWP – How the Victorian Government is supporting Zero Emissions Vehicles Strategy and sustainable transport

Zoe McMaster, Sustainable Communities Project Officer,
Moreland City Council – Two exciting behaviour change projects to promote active travel and sustainable streets

Health and wellbeing and our changing environment
Information, facts, case studies, and deep knowledge demonstrating that caring for the environment and country isn’t just a touchy-feely add-on to the steel and mortar of roads and bridges. When our land and water is sick, we cannot thrive.

Hosted by Carole Hammond, Executive Officer of the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance, the panel for this session includes:

Steve Nash, Manager Operations Goulburn Valley Water - Greening Euroa: second-hand water giving life to country towns
Greening Euroa video

Tanya Vernes, Principal NRM Advisor, Federation of Victorian Traditional Owner Corporations - Changing climate, changing country

Dr Greg Moore, University of Melbourne – Thanks to COVID-19 we now know  the value of urban forests
